Limpopo MEC for Sport, Arts and Culture Onicca Moloi has conveyed her condolences to the Motimele family as they mourn the passing of one of the country’s giants Matshediso Aletta Motimele

Motimele passed away on Saturday 10 February 2017 (Saturday) afternoon in the Polokwane Hospital after a short illness. She died at the age of 77 and was known and will continuously be known for working with the SABC. She was a teacher by profession and an artist who had plenty of admirers. Beyond all that, Motimele was a passionate champion of the Sepedi language.

She wrote about 32 radio dramas such as KGENGEREPE, LEBONE LA LEHU and KANYAKANYA MOEPONG for the SABC’s Thobela FM.


She also wrote 3 books those which include the likes of MEPIPI KA MOKA E A NA, PODILANE MANKGA AND TSELAKGOPO. Some of these books were prescribed for the school curriculum. Throughout her career, Motimele was given several awards for her contribution to the Sepedi literature and culture. In December 2016, MEC Moloi recognised Motimele’s writings and contribution by conveying her with the “Lifetime Achiever’s Award”. In 2017, Motimele was granted a Lifetime Achievement Literary Award for her tireless work towards promoting Sepedi by the South African Literary Awards.


MEC Moloi describes Motimele’s passing as a loss not only to her family, but to the province, the country and the literary sector. “Mme Aletta Motimele was undoubtedly an icon when it comes to Sepedi drama, poetry and prose. She passed away just a few days before the world and UNESCO celebrate international Mother Language Day (MLD) on February 21, 2017, under the theme ‘TOWARDS SUSTAINABLE FUTURES THROUGH MULTILINGUAL EDUCATION’, says MEC Moloi.


“At this time of grief, our thoughts are with the Motimele family including all the people she has touched throughout her journey of life”, MEC Moloi added.


The funeral will be held on Saturday, 17th February 2017, at Mountain View Village, Ga Molepo, East of Polokwane.
