Houstonian Chelsea Sandridge, 30, was waiting to checkout at the HEB in Katy near Fry Road when she noticed a young man and woman standing in line behind her. Her cart was loaded, and they only had a couple items so without hesitation she let them go ahead of her.

Sandridge didn’t think much of her small gesture, but it impacted the young man more than she could have thought.

“I assumed they had left because I saw them walk off,” Sandridge said. “Then I went to pull out my wallet and the guy was back and he was like ‘I want to get this for you.'”

At first Sandridge told him he didn’t have to do that, but after he insisted, she agreed. They both watched the total tally up, and when it came to $135 Sandridge offered to split the bill, but he refused, insisting that he was going to pay the full amount saying, “you did something nice for us, and now I want to do something nice for you.”

“When he offered to pay, I was completely shocked and inspired that someone I had never met would do something so kind,” Sandridge said. “He had no reason to spend his hard earned money on my groceries other than the fact that he wanted show his appreciation for my small act of kindness, because let’s be real, letting him pay for his two items first only set me back a minute or two.”

After he’d paid, Sandridge asked to take a photo with the young man so she could share the story and hopefully inspire people around her.

“There’s so much negativity in the world, this was a glowing reminder that there are good, positive and kind people all around us,” Sandridge said. “This was a beautiful and touching reminder that by showing someone a little kindness, you can have a profound affect on them.”

“His gesture has inspired me. I want to make other people feel the way he made me feel, and will pay it forward, just like he did, as often as I can. We’re not always in the position to help, but when we are, we should. Nothing inspires random acts of kindness like random acts of kindness.”
