1st December, the day the world commemorates world AIDS day, a day of reflection and unity in the fight against HIV and AIDS. Every year World AIDS day events take place across the country to raise awareness and show support for people living with HIV and AIDS.

South Africa has the biggest and most high profile HIV epidemic in the world with an estimated 7 million people living with HIV. We also have the largest antiretroviral treatment programme globally.

In the last year, South Africa has made major changes on managing HIV. Everyone now can start receiving treatment as soon as they know their status. South Africa has broken grounds by launching the first Aids vaccination. The vaccination, known as HVTN 702 will involve more than 5400 sexually active men and women aged 18-35 in 15 areas around South Arica over four years.

The South African National Aids Council (Sanac) says the country has come a long way and made some improvements in the fight against HIV and AIDS, particularly in the reduction of mother-to-child infections.
