The African National Congress (ANC) leaders from the Thumamina Campaign in the Vuyani Zibi branch in Mqanduli, Eastern Cape, took the initiative to host a memorial service in the old city hall to honor late comrades who worked hard during the struggle to ensure free equal education and the right to equality amongst white and black people.

The Vuyani Zibi branch made this brilliant event in accordance with the 16th of June as it is the crucial holiday that gets celebrated across the country every year. The purpose of the event was to honor the late comrades from the small city Mqanduli as they contributed to the youth struggles of 1976. It was also to celebrate the late Mother of Nation, Mama Winnie Madikizela Mandela, the late Walter Sisulu and the struggle icon Nelson Mandela.

The comrades who were special guests on the event were accompanied by young pupils from the Lower Ngqwarha Junior Secondary School as they were performing sequential majorettes, and the KSD municipality traffic services around the small town, these guests were Rev Mkunkqa, Mr. Qodi, comrade Zozo, comrade Mlotywa and comrade Kebeni. A teacher from Ngqwarha J.S.S, Miss Mqolombeni said that “I dedicate my time and energy to these kids because this is a way of decreasing the high rate of crime and teenage pregnancy in this small town”.

The events’ program director was the chairperson of the region in Eastern Cape Mr. Xolile Kompela. He said that they had met the deceased comrade’s families in the Tourism Centre privately to show gratitude and mourn. The late comrades are Vuyani Zibi, Thobeka Gxabhagxabha, Mr. Mthwa Mcebisi as the councilor of the ward who has also passed on recently – Mr. Nkazimlo Qodi, Mr. Lungile Mpamba, Mr. Gaba and Mr. Demesha Silulami.
