A day of fun and motivation

It was all fun and emotional when micro-biologist and founder of Empress on Top, Thandi Magqeleba hosted the NGO’s second I am “me” conference for girls , aimed at empowering a girl child by offering them skills to tackle day to day challenges.

Creating a platform where they can discuss challenges they are facing without passing judgment but rather solutions on how they can deal with those challenges, the girls can also meet mentors they never had. The event created a fun day where girls could learn and have fun, leave feeling important and worthy .The event was held at Robbie De Lange Hall in Sunny Ridge, East London on Saturday morning.

It was graced by various speakers, an Environmental Scientist Ms Andisiwe Stuurman, Ms Vuyo Nqweniso from the Department of Transport and Mrs. Roocks Moodley who is the Director of the Eastern Cape NGO Coalition. Different speakers touched on various aspects such as finding your identity and following your dreams, becoming a beauty with a purpose and what it means to be bold, confident ,being you and how to find your purpose.

(The girls came out in their numbers to hear words of wisdom)

Thandi Magqeleba said, ”The I am me conference for girls is a moving platform that is meant to pave a way forward for girls on how to deal or alleviate daily life problems that young girls are facing amongst themselves and the society as a whole. We want to build self-esteem and confidence, so that we may breed a new generation of young leaders who are strong and warm who will align their purpose with service and serve others as well. We are serving them hence our slogan is saying ‘empower to be empowered’, that is our message to young girls”.

“If you learn, teach”, Magqeleba quoted the famous quote by Maya Angelou. She emphasized on how important it is to plough back to the community the knowledge you grasped at school or university. “This will be helpful in terms of motivating and finding a way to solve the challenges they face and they will put into practice the knowledge you provide to them and make a change in their societies and in their lives”.
