‘Do what your heart desires the most’

“I think any transformation journey in life takes a lot of hard work and preparation”, these are the words of newly crowned Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa, Matapa Maila-Rikhotso when asked about what it took to prepare for the Mrs SA journey leading to the glorious crowning moment.

Matapa was crowned Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa 2019 on Friday at a star studded grand finale held at Emperors Palace, east of Johannesburg. The event saw the likes of SABC 3 presenter Katlego Maboe, DJ Zinhle, Mrs World, Alice Lee Giannette, to mention but a few - gracing the stage as MC, DJ and judge.

Born and bred in Limpopo, 33 year old Matapa is a mother of a 4-year old daughter, a career and business woman who has used her organisation Matapa and Friends to keep a girl child in school.

Because of her disadvantaged background, completing matric seemed impossible for Matapa but today she’s a graduate 4 times over. “It is possible; dreams do not have to have an address. There can be an alternative ending to our story, you just need to keep pushing hard and believing in yourself”.

Being crowned Mrs South Africa comes with responsibilities as much as it comes with great opportunities and Matapa is looking forward to her year of reign; “I’m looking forward to a beautiful and empowering journey not only for myself but for everybody around me. Women are in their power today and we need to harness that to the fullest”.

Matapa’s message to South Africans during this month of November where the nation speaks with one voice saying no to violence against women and children is that “We’re living in an era where women will no longer tolerate being subjects, we’re co-creators. We want to multiply, we want to be women for other women and we need platforms such as the Tammy Taylor Mrs South Africa to advocate and give voice to issues such as gender based violence and femicide in this country”

Her message to other women is to “Say yes to life, do not limit yourself, and live life to the full”.
