The Steve Biko Academic Hospital in Pretoria has conducted what it calls a pioneering middle ear transplant surgery using 3D technology.

The operation, the first of its kind in the world, maybe the answer to conductive hearing loss, middle ear problems caused by congenital birth defects, infections, trauma or metabolic disease.

Developed by Professor Mashudu Tshifularo of the University of Pretoria's Health Sciences Faculty and his team, the procedure can be performed on everyone with hearing problems including new-borns. The first patient went into theatre this morning.
